Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a condition that affects the brain’s ability to interpret and make sense of sounds it receives.

People with APD can hear but have trouble understanding language, particularly in noisy or complex environments. This makes following directions, listening in groups, processing rapid information difficult.

APD is diagnosed by an audiologist, but speech therapy can help with the language skills impacted by APD. At Blossom, we work with adults and older adolescents with APD.

Treatment may include:

  • Identifying supports and compensations for work, school, and home

  • Language and vocabulary enhancement

  • Language comprehension practice

  • Self advocacy skills

  • Environmental modifications
